| Abstract: | Adapts field-based, sedimentological approach to classification of glacigenic deposits in Iceland, focusing on subglacial till containing evidence for deformation. Combines macro- and micro-sedimentological and geophysical techniques (including experimental use of ground penetrating radar), facies description and genetic interpretations. Examines exposures from forefields of nine outlet glaciers of Langjökull, Myrdalsjökull, Vatnajökull and Oraefajökull. Classifies sediments and investigates subglacial deformation signatures, processes and spatial extent. Observes deformed sediments at all but one glacier, with estimated thicknesses ranging from 0.15-2.0 m and calculated basal shear stresses from 17-56 kPa. Concludes sediment deformation dominant process beneath Icelandic glaciers. |
