Record #174173:

The nervous system / John MacDonald, John Montgomery.

Title: The nervous system / John MacDonald, John Montgomery.
Author(s): MacDonald, John.
Montgomery, John.
Date: 2005.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Physiology of polar fishes. (2005.),
Abstract: Describes physiology of nervous systems and sensory organs of polar fishes, with particular reference to temperature adaptation in the nervous system. Discusses special features of neurophysiology of fish from stenothermal Arctic and Antarctic environments, themes common to both groups, and how polar species differ from fishes that are more eurythermal yet can acclimatize to severe cold. Physiological function of sensory systems is considered principally in relation to extreme seasonality and periods of low light in polar environment. Includes cellular function; temperature compensation in the nervous system; brains of polar fishes; visual function; chemical senses; and mechanosenses.
