Record #174167:

Antifreeze proteins and organismal freezing avoidance in polar fishes / Arthus L. DeVries, C.-H. Christina Cheng.

Title: Antifreeze proteins and organismal freezing avoidance in polar fishes / Arthus L. DeVries, C.-H. Christina Cheng.
Author(s): DeVries, Arthus L.
Cheng, C. -H. Christina.
Date: 2005.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Physiology of polar fishes. (2005.),
Abstract: Reviews freezing avoidance of polar fishes by means of antifreeze proteins, with particular reference to how antifreezes interface with anatomy and physiology of fish, and in relation to freezing marine environments. Includes freezing challenge to hyposmotic teleost fish in ice-laden freezing marine environments; migration to ice-free habitats and undercooling in absence of ice as strategies for avoiding freezing; organismal freezing points; antifreeze glycoproteins and peptides; freezing behaviour of antifreeze protein solutions and adsorption-inhibition mechanism of noncolligative antifreeze activity; environmental ice and exogenous/endogenous ice in polar fish; integument as physical barrier to ice propagation; synthesis and distribution of antifreeze proteins in body fluids; stability of undercooled fish fluids lacking antifreeze proteins; serum hysteresis levels and environmental severity; and mechanism of organismal freeze avoidance.
