Abstract: Uses seismic refraction data to describe Mount Ross in Iles Kerguelen, recently-formed volcano built up over 2 Ma providing outstanding model of volcanism occurring on intraplate structure already aged 40 Ma. P-wave velocities within upper crust range downward from 5.35 km/s at sea level to 6.60 km/s at depth of 11 km, definitely higher than in surrounding plateau basalts, indicating origin and composition of basement far distinct from tholeiitic or transitional lava flows generated near spreading centres. Monozonite and syenite are basic materials of basement, with seismic velocities and related Poisson ratio within lower crust consistent with gabbros as prominent material.
