| Abstract: | Investigates link between North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index and sea ice fluctuations in North Atlantic, together with influence of stratospheric polar vortex on such fluctuations. Examines NCEP/NCAR reanalysis atmospheric data, weekly sea ice data from NSIDC and various sources of observed and modelled data for ice export from Fram Strait (FS) into Arctic Ocean. Concludes: modelled FS ice export significantly linked to planetary wave 1 phase; FS ice flux coupled to Svalbard glacier mass balance and Greenland Sea summer ice extent; NAO modulates North Atlantic / Arctic ice fluctuations and strongly influences Odden (negatively correlated with index); stratospheric polar vortex bears some influence on ice conditions. |
