Abstract: Uses x-rays of vertebral half-centra, and x-rays and transmitted white light examination of caudal thorns from specimens collected from commercial longliners during 2000-01 and 2002-03 fishing seasons to produce preliminary estimates of ages of Antarctic skate. Caudal thorns viewed with transmitted white light provided clearest growth bands, but low reading precision produced uncertain age estimates, and annual deposition of thorn bands has not been validated. Conservative maximum estimated age was 14 years, with no obvious difference in growth between sexes. Applying von Bertalanffy curve produced estimated ages at maturity of 6-7 years for males and 8-11 years for females, which are near middle to upper end of range of ages at maturity for skates worldwide.
