| Abstract: | Researches simple techniques for identifying weak layers in snowpack, aiming to design cheap, portable profiling device. To indicate relative hardness and grain size difference between layers without snow pit excavation, investigates displacement of latex membrane inflated within snowpack and indentation on Silly Putty (silicon oil/boric acid mixture). Reviews snow structure/morphology. Describes experiments inflating membranes in polystyrene snow substitute and artificial snow and observing membrane in situ using Perspex rig. Reports problems with latex membrane exceeding elastic limit. Describes tests alongside existing probes at two sites in Norway. Although Silly Putty indentation good indicator of snow hardness, reports difficulty designing plunger rig insertable into snowpack and applying even pressure. |
