Subsurface oxygen consumption: environmental controls and impacts / Bo Elberling.

Title: Subsurface oxygen consumption: environmental controls and impacts / Bo Elberling.
Author(s): Elberling, Bo.
Date: 2005.
Publisher: København: Det Kongelige Danske Geografiske Selskab
Abstract: Uses field and laboratory studies, and model simulations, to examine subsurface gas transport dominated by oxygen diffusion, and environmental controls and impacts of two contrasting oxygen consumption processes, with particular reference to mineralisation of soil organic matter, and oxidation of sulphidic mine waste and rocks. Includes methods of quantifying subsurface gas concentrations and fluxes; global variations and environmental factors limiting subsurface O₂ consumption; non-steady state conditions in different soil types and climates, and high reactivity of organic-rich material in tundra and sub-glacial soils in terms of CO₂ production; environmental impacts of near-surface oxygen consumption processes in relation to release of weathering products to drainage and surface waters in permafrost areas; and remedial actions to reduce subsurface oxygen consumption, which include saturation of mine tailings in cold climates.
