Record #173590:

Albatross long-distance navigation: comparing adults and juveniles / Susanne Åkesson, Henri Weimerskirch.

Title: Albatross long-distance navigation: comparing adults and juveniles / Susanne Åkesson, Henri Weimerskirch.

Date: 2005.
In: Journal of Navigation. (2005.), Vol. 58(3) (2005)
Abstract: Presents results of satellite telemetry tracking of first year dispersal and migration in juvenile wandering albatrosses from sub-Antarctic Crozet Islands during their first year at sea in 2001-02. Rapid dispersal towards unproductive and low wind north and northeast was assisted by southerly winds. Thereafter individuals restricted movements to particular zones of ocean, which may be used until start of breeding 7-10 years later. Dispersal in young birds corresponds well with movements observed for adult non-breeding wandering albatrosses, showing clearly inherited ability to navigate back to areas already visited when young. Juvenile dispersal behaviour and migration at sea suggest genetically based migration program, encoding navigation to destination area used throughout life.
