Activity rhythms at a gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) colony at Cierva Point, Antarctic Peninsula / Rubén D. Quintana, Paula D. Pratolongo, José L. Agraz, Oscar Benítez, Alberto Ripalta Mengual.

Title: Activity rhythms at a gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) colony at Cierva Point, Antarctic Peninsula / Rubén D. Quintana, Paula D. Pratolongo, José L. Agraz, Oscar Benítez, Alberto Ripalta Mengual.

Date: 2005.
In: Notornis. (2005.), Vol. 52(3) (2005)
Abstract: Describes departure and arrival patterns at gentoo penguin colony during 1992-93 Antarctic summer. Penguins showed strong daily rhythm of activity, with peak of penguins departing to sea at dawn, and secondary peak of departures in afternoon, coincident with peak of returns. Although behaviour could be explained by nest relief schedules, pattern remained once crèches had formed. Discusses whether light signal of dawn or endogenous circadian clock synchronizes activity.
