Abstract: Presents synthesis of Macquarie Ridge Complex (MRC) tectonic structures and paleo-reconstruction models of kinematic evolution of Pacific-Australia plate boundary south of New Zealand since Eocene. Ascertains geodynamical conditions preceding subduction initiation at Puysegur subduction zone, and nature and structures of crust that first subducted. Right-lateral motion at 150-km-wide transpressive relay zone has juxtaposed oceanic and continental crusts, facilitating inception of subduction and controlling subduction vergence. Upper and lower plate inherited structures of Puysegur region subsequently guided and facilitated lengthening of subduction zone during Neogene. Individual segments of MRC to 62° S represent different stages of incipient subduction, whose development depends on local geodynamical conditions and lithospheric heterogeneities, and demonstrates that subduction can initiate from oceanic spreading centre.
