Record #173501:

On the glaciological, meteorological, and climatological significance of Antarctic blue ice areas / Richard Bintanja.

Title: On the glaciological, meteorological, and climatological significance of Antarctic blue ice areas / Richard Bintanja.
Author(s): Bintanja, Richard.
Date: 1999.
In: Reviews of Geophysics. (1999.), Vol. 37(3) (1999)
Abstract: Reviews knowledge of Antarctic blue ice areas (BIAs), covering early interest as meteorite traps, and glaciological (and later meteorological) investigations from 1949 onward. Though scattered widely, BIAs cover only 1% of area. Describes general BIA characteristics and discusses formation and age. Examines BIAs as glaciological features, where horizontal ice flow is with convergent and upward movement is balanced by surface ablation. Using field data from Queen Maud Land and elsewhere, discusses local surface mass balance, and meteorological features such as wind and surface energy fluxes. Discusses use of BIAs as climate indicators and their potential response to changes on various timescales. Glossary.
