| Abstract: | Reviews applications of satellite based remote sensing to mapping dynamic behaviour of ice sheets. Discusses importance of ice sheets and what can be measured from space, using imagery in the visible spectrum, synthetic aperture radar (including interferometry) and thermal infrared radiometry. Using examples from Antarctica and Greenland, describes techniques for measuring ice sheet elevation, surface features and movement, surface temperature and melting, snow facies and snowpack structure, and accumulation rate. Discusses data availability, continuing need for surface measurements as control, and poor coverage at very high latitudes. |
