Record #173475:

Alpine permafrost occurrence at its spatial limits: first results from the eastern margin of the European Alps / Andreas Kellerer-Pirklbauer.

Title: Alpine permafrost occurrence at its spatial limits: first results from the eastern margin of the European Alps / Andreas Kellerer-Pirklbauer.
Author(s): Kellerer-Pirklbauer, Andreas.
Date: 2005.
In: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. (2005.), Vol. 59(2) (2005)
Abstract: Reports first results of permafrost distribution study in Niedere Tauern Range, Styria, Austria. Discusses small-scale modelling results and large-scale field validation. Two regional modelling approaches indicate very low percentage of probable permafrost. Field results underline importance of snow cover characteristics and coarse debris distribution for permafrost occurrence at its spatial limits. Suitable conditions allow permafrost existence at mean annual air temperature of 1.6°C. Concludes some rock glaciers thought "relict" are underlain by permafrost at altitudes far below modelled permafrost occurrence. In special issue Permafrost geomporphological systems in a changing global climate, edited by Ole Humlun and Ketil Isaksen.
