First results of investigations on hydrothermal processes within the active layer above alpine permafrost in steep terrain / Armin Rist, Marcia Phillips.

Title: First results of investigations on hydrothermal processes within the active layer above alpine permafrost in steep terrain / Armin Rist, Marcia Phillips.

In: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. (2005.), Vol. 59(2) (2005)
Abstract: Investigates interactions of hydrological and thermal processes in active layer of alpine permafrost in steep terrain with coarse-grained surface material. Describes use of specially developed equipment in steep scree above Pontresina, Upper Engadin, Switzerland to measure ground temperatures, heat flux, water infiltration rate, soil water contents, surface level of saturated zone, electrical water conductivity, vapour flux, and downslope displacement. Results indicate close temporal correlation during thawing period between hydrological and thermal parameters in ground, slope stability and meteorological parameters. Ground temperature increase and downslope displacement begins simultaneously during infiltration of snow meltwater. In special issue Permafrost geomporphological systems in a changing global climate, edited by Ole Humlun and Ketil Isaksen.
