Record #173473:

Frost heave on earth hummocks (pounus) in Finnish Lapland / Matti Seppälä.

Title: Frost heave on earth hummocks (pounus) in Finnish Lapland / Matti Seppälä.
Author(s): Seppälä, Matti.
Date: 2005.
In: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. (2005.), Vol. 59(2) (2005)
Abstract: Reports monitoring of frost heave, frost and snow depths on two earth hummocks (pounus) from 1992-2002 designed to identify whether hummocks are currently or periodically active, or relict features. Frost heave was measured with motometers, frost depth with Gandahl's frost tube containing methylene blue, and snow depth with frost tubes above ground surface. Mean annual frost heave on peat pounu was up to twice that on mineral-cored one. Frost heave on pounus differed little from that of surrounding mire. During early summer, slow thawing keeps pounu surfaces higher than mire, supporting hummock formation. In special issue Permafrost geomporphological systems in a changing global climate, edited by Ole Humlun and Ketil Isaksen.
