| Abstract: | Presents bedrock temperatures measured over 12-month period at six sites in Gruve-7 coal mine (only currently active mine near Longyearbyen). Describes local geomorphology, ground ice deposits, instrumentation and monitoring. Data complement near-surface ground thermal data in nearby PACE borehole and demonstrate three-dimensional nature of permafrost within periglacial and glacial parts of Svalbard's upland massifs. Mine extends below Foxfonna glacier and ice cap, so temperatures recorded reflect glacier-permafrost interaction. Higher permafrost temperatures occur at deeper locations within massif below ice cap and glacier, lowest where mine extends beneath ice-free terrain.
