| Abstract: | Investigates effects of climate change on ground temperatures and permafrost distribution in Swiss Alps with respect to snow cover thickness and snow period variations. Uses soil-extended version of 1-D mass and energy balance model SNOWPACK. Describes model, meteorological input data, and soil initial conditions. Simulates impact of two realistic climate-change scenarios of European ACACIA project, based on predicted changes in summer and winter precipitation and air temperatures for years 2020, 2050 and 2080. Predicts steadily increasing active layer depth, with lower limit of permafrost occurrence rising 170-580 m over 80 years.
