Record #173461:

Jökulhlaups: a reassessment of floodwater flow through glaciers / Matthew J. Roberts.

Title: Jökulhlaups: a reassessment of floodwater flow through glaciers / Matthew J. Roberts.
Author(s): Roberts, Matthew J.
Date: 2005.
In: Reviews of Geophysics. (2005.), Vol. 36(1) (2005)
Abstract: Review aiming to: reassess how floodwater flows through glaciers; develop qualatitative view of subglacial processes during jökulhlaups; and suggest research priorities. Uses mostly Icelandic examples to illustrate geophysical processes, focusing on interactions between various components of glacier and drainage system under extreme hydraulic transience. Shows some jökulhlaups produce subglacial responses wholly inconsistent with conventional drainge theory and argues two separable classes of jökulhlaup exist (exponentially rising and linearly rising). Discusses theoretical models, assumptions, and emergence of extraordinary jökulhlaups. Discusses triggering of linearly rising jökulhlaups and glacier responses to them. Examines link between extraordionary jökulhlaups and Heinrich events. Outlines observations and modelling required to advance understanding.
