| Abstract: | Examines deglaciation of eastern flank of the Northern Patagonian Icefield between latitudes 46° and 48° S in attempt to link chronologies of Last Glacial Maximum moraines and those close to present-day outlet glaciers. Describes evidence from lake shorelines, lake sediments and glacier margins, using field sites chosen using satellite imagery. Reconstructs deglaciation pattern and chronology using fourteen ¹⁴C and two exposure age dates and discusses implications. Identifies rapid glacier retreat 15-16 ka BP to within 20 km of present margins, period of glacier and lake stability, and final deglaciation at c. 12.8 ka when lakes suddenly drained. |
