| Abstract: | Appraises evidence for succession of ice-dammed lakes in central Strait of Magellan 17,000-12,250 cal. yr BP. Presents data from palaeoshorelines and glacio-lacustrine sediments at Pampa Alegre, Puente Charlie, and Cabo Valentin and interprets stratigraphy. Dates these by association with tephra layer from Volcan Reclús and ¹⁴C-dated peats. Proposes chronology containing two glacier advances, extending over 150 km and 80 km beyond present ice limits. Compares with other chronologies. Suggests mechanisms behind timing of Magellan late-glacial ice dammed lakes, asynchronous with retreat of Patagonian icefields further north and coeval with Antarctic cold reversal. |
