Abstract: | Account of effects of warming climate on Scottish snow, with emphasis on skiing areas and summer survival of snow patches. Reviews climate since 1900, including influence of North Atlantic Oscillation, recent mild winters, etc. Discusses development and changing fortunes of skiing, winter climbing and other Scottish winter sports. Reviews studies of summer snow patches on Scottish hills (Cairngorms, Ben Nevis, etc.), examining snow distribution, particularly in sheltered north-facing corries, and statistics of survival into winter. |
