Formation of Martian gullies by avalanches of seasonal CO₂ frost / Tetsuyuki Ishii, Hideaki Miyamoto, Sho Sasaki.
Title: | Formation of Martian gullies by avalanches of seasonal CO₂ frost / Tetsuyuki Ishii, Hideaki Miyamoto, Sho Sasaki. |
Author(s): | Ishii, Tetsuyuki. Miyamoto, Hideaki. Sasaki, Sho. |
Date: | 2005. |
Language: | Japanese. |
In: | Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2005.), Vol. 67(2) (2005) |
Abstract: | Examines possibility that recently observed Martian gully-like features associated with fluid flows may be forming today through avalanches of seasonal CO₂ frost. Notes possible evidence in springtime Mars Orbiter Camera images of such avalanches on walls in polar pits. Calculates thickness of CO₂ frost condensed on local slopes as function of latitude and obliquity by using an energy balance model that includes local slope effects. Results show significant correlation between latitudinal distributions of orientations of gullied slopes and of slopes covered with seasonal CO₂ frost. |
