Abstract: | Develops ideas about Antarctic ice cover based on structural geomorphology. Divides ice cover into two main layers: glaciersphere, free from influence of subglacial relief; and zone of glacier contact with lithosphere, where structure and dynamics are influenced by subglacial relief and pressure of upper ice layer. Uses detailed map of flow vectors and hypsometrical data to identify dividing points and lines, and morphological surface elements. Divides surface into basins of ice concentration (convergence), spreading areas, and transit zones in which moving glacier mass is affected by neither convergence nor spreading. Areas are denoted initial, transit and terminal, accordingly. Both forms of glacier movement, frontal and jet (stream), can then be presented simultaneously on geomorphologic map. |
