Active layer monitoring in the cryolithozone of West Siberia / E.S. Melnokov, M.O. Leibman, N.G. Moskalenko, A.A. Vasiliev.

Title: Active layer monitoring in the cryolithozone of West Siberia / E.S. Melnokov, M.O. Leibman, N.G. Moskalenko, A.A. Vasiliev.
Author(s): Melnokov, E. S.
Leibman, M. O.
Moskalenko, N. G.
Vasiliev, A. A.
Date: 2004.
In: Polar Geography. (2004.), Vol. 28(4) (2004)
Abstract: Investigates active-layer dynamics in tundra and taiga bioclimatic zones under climate fluctuations. Summarizes results from research in 1970s prior to establishment of Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring Program and sites employing CALM protocols added in 1990s. Includes Marre-Sale and Vaskiny Dachi in tundra zone and Nadym in taiga. Presents measurements of active layer thickness, soil moisture volume, air temperature, etc. Concludes: 1) climatic trends not evident in tundra zone, but weakly discernible in taiga zone; 2) active-layer fluctuations appear to follow climatic trends; 3) different landscapes respond differently to climate changes; and 4) atmospheric precipitation plays important role in annual fluctuation of active-layer thickness.
