Climate memory and long-range forecasting of sea ice conditions in Husdon Strait / William A. Gough, Christopher Houser.
Title: | Climate memory and long-range forecasting of sea ice conditions in Husdon Strait / William A. Gough, Christopher Houser. |
Author(s): | Gough, William A. Houser, Christopher. |
Date: | 2005. |
In: | Polar Geography. (2005.), Vol. 29(1) (2005) |
Abstract: | Demonstrates forecasting of ice conditions, particularly dates of ice formation and retreat, in Hudson Strait up to seven months in advance. Uses results of time series analysis for 1971-1999 sea ice observations from three sites to "forecast" values for 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Method uses correlations between length of ice-free and ice-covered seasons from one year to next. Compares forecast with observations and makes forecast for 2004. Dates of ice formation forecast were within one week of those observed, dates of retreat within one week to 15 days depending on site. Examines improvement gained by including average air temperature in last ice-free season. |
