Date: 2005.
In: Planet Earth. (2005.), Spring (2005)
Abstract: Brief account of research using remote sensing techniques to reconstruct offshore extent of Pleistocene British ice sheet. Combines onshore evidence with new images of current and former seabed surfaces to investigate glacier flow directions. Describes interpretation of aerial photographs, side-scan sonar and 3D seismic reflection data from Assynt in north-west Scotland, and beneath sea between Assynt and Lewis. Linear features running towards Sula Sgeir trough mouth fan and moraines suggest ice streams fed fan during last 500,000 years. Similar studies off eastern Scotland suggest extensive North Sea ice cover during last glacial maximum (LGM). Concludes LGM British ice sheet was constantly advancing and retreating, pulsing at times with fast-flowing glaciers and extending "considerable distance" offshore.
