Record #173413:

Northern Hemisphere snow extent trends derived from optical and microwave satellite data / R.L. Armstrong, M.J. Brodzik.

Title: Northern Hemisphere snow extent trends derived from optical and microwave satellite data / R.L. Armstrong, M.J. Brodzik.
Author(s): Armstrong, R. L.
Brodzik, M. J.
Date: 2004.
Language: Russian transliteration entered into original records using BGN/PCGN 1947 romanisation of Russian; Cyrillic text in MARC 880 field(s) reverse transliterated from this by automated process; BGN/PCGN 1947 text then upgraded to Library of Congress romanisation.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2004.), Vol. 97 (2004)
Abstract: Compares NOAA Northern Hemisphere weekly snow extent time series using optical band with hemispheric-scale snow extent derived from SMMR and SSM/I passive microwave (PM) data. Compares monthly snow extent climatology, departures from monthly means, and 1979-2001 snow extent trends for Northern Hemisphere. Concludes PM algorithm generally underestimates early winter snow extent (improves when 85 GHz channel included). Snow extent trends are: NOAA - similar rates of decrease over Eurasia and North America; PM - decrease in Eurasia, slight increase in North America. Describes new NSIDC product - monthly mean snow water equivalent and snow extent for 1978-2004 - blending PM data with NOAA weekly snow extent charts.
