Record #173412:

Geophysical, geochemical, glaciological and energy balance model constraints to the lake Vostok / J.R. Petit.

Title: Geophysical, geochemical, glaciological and energy balance model constraints to the lake Vostok / J.R. Petit.
Author(s): Petit, J. R.
Date: 2004.
Language: Russian transliteration entered into original records using BGN/PCGN 1947 romanisation of Russian; Cyrillic text in MARC 880 field(s) reverse transliterated from this by automated process; BGN/PCGN 1947 text then upgraded to Library of Congress romanisation.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2004.), Vol. 97 (2004)
Abstract: Describes lake's geographical and glaciological setting, conditions in which ice freezes to base of ice sheet overlying lake, observations of accreted ice recovered and material found within it, ice-water equilibrium and implications for lake. Presents empirical model for lake's water cycle and energy balance. Sketches hypothetical water circulation, including ice pumping phenomenon under tilted bottom surface resembling that under ice shelves. Sketches heat balance and heat cycle. Examines sensitivities of calculated lake water renewal time, melting and accretion rates to observations of heat flux at Vostok, percentage of frazil ice, etc. Compares implied ice sheet surface movement with observations.
