Abstract: | Uses Fourier analysis of electrical self potential, water pressure, and electrical conductivity time series collected in winter beneath Haut Glacier d'Arolla, Switzerland, to show these are forced by earth and atmospheric tides. Describes measurements in five boreholes in ablation area, sourcing of earth and atmospheric tide data, and Fourier power spectra. Discusses influence of earth tides and atmospheric tides, and tide-induced basal processes. Forcing is greatest during periods of expanding bedrock, consistent with glacier substrate deformation driving water from ice body into bed, and potentially modifying subglacial sediment strength and influence glacier drainage and motion on a global scale. |
