Abstract: Examines behaviour of Bering Sea St. Lawrence Island polynya during 1999 winter using AVHRR, RADARSAT SAR, meteorological data, over-winter moored upward looking sonars (ULS) and SeaBird salinity/temperature sensors. Aims to study ice/ocean response to polynya events south of island during periods of cold northerly winds. Defines thermal ice thickness from AVHRR-derived surface temperature, meteorological observations and heat flux model. Compares thermal and ULS thicknesses for congelation and frazil ice, noting agreement when satellites observe congelation ice over ULSs. Discusses case when SAR observes Langmuir plumes, indicating frazil ice formation. Observations suggest crystals nucleate at depth or are transported there by Langmuir circulation. Compares observed frazil thickness and polynya widths with predictions of Pease model.
