In: Géographie Physique et Quaternaire. (2003.), Vol. 57(2-3) (2003)
Abstract: Discusses Holocene vegetation succession, permafrost dynamics and peat accumulation in Usinsk mire, Pechora lowlands of Komi Republic. Area is in extreme northern taiga near southern permafrost limit. Aims to date permafrost aggradation and study effect on ecology, hydrology and carbon balance of mire ecosystem. Bases reconstructions on plant macro-fossil analysis and detailed AMS radiocarbon dating of two peat profiles. Reports organic accumulation began 11,350 ¹⁴C-years BP. Permafrost became established around 2300 BP. Palsas and peat plateaus have experienced several periods of freezing and entire/partial thawing. Extant permafrost stages are young. Long-term carbon accumulation rate is 19 g/m²/yr. Average in dynamic permafrost stage is 23 g/m²/yr.
