Record #173369:

Faint traces of high Arctic glaciations: an early Holocene ice-front fluctuation in Bolterdalen, Svalbard / Ida Lønne.

Title: Faint traces of high Arctic glaciations: an early Holocene ice-front fluctuation in Bolterdalen, Svalbard / Ida Lønne.
Author(s): Lønne, Ida.
Date: 2005.
In: Boreas. (2005.), Vol. 34(3) (2005)
Abstract: Examines field observations from raised beach displaying continuous succession of ice-front advance and retreat deposits in Bolterdalen, central Svalbard. Presents surface morphology, stratigraphy and radiocarbon dating. Reconstructs syn- and post-sedimentary processes: ice-front advance over frozen sediment surface; advance into shallow marine water with formation of wave-influenced ice-contact delta; continued advance and deposition of submarine fan in front of partly floating tidewater front; final ice-front retreat where subglacial till deposits and sediment rich ice left onshore were reworked and redistributed into thin sediment sheets. Discusses palaeoclimatic implications and identification of terrestrial ice margins in polar regions.
