Record #173368:

A test of the englacial thrusting hypothesis of 'hummocky' moraine formation: case studies from the northwest Highlands, Scotland / Sven Lukas.

Title: A test of the englacial thrusting hypothesis of 'hummocky' moraine formation: case studies from the northwest Highlands, Scotland / Sven Lukas.
Author(s): Lukas, Sven.
Date: 2005.
In: Boreas. (2005.), Vol. 34(3) (2005)
Abstract: Reviews models ("incremental active retreat" and "englacial and proglacial thrusting") of formation of Scottish Younger Dryas ice-marginal hummocky moraines and presents detailed geomorphological and sedimentological results from NW Highlands. Aims to reconstruct glacier dynamics and test englacial thrusting model. Presents six case studies: terrestrial ice-contact fan; deformed ice-contact fans formed in succession; dislocated ice-contact fans; partly overridden and glaciotectonized ice-contact fans; completely overridden ice-contact fans; and deformed outwash sediments. Moraines represent terrestrial ice-contact fans. Evidence strongly suggests temperate glacier regime and short response times similar to those in SW Norway or Iceland. Rejects thrusting model and Svalbard analogue for Younger Dryas moraines in Scotland.
