Abstract: Describes three contrasting interpretations, based solely on field evidence, of Loch Lomond Stadial glaciation in western Scottish Highlands. Compares these with new empirical data and predictions from high-resolution numerical model. Focuses on area between Loch glacier limit in Glen Lyon and main ice dispersal centre of mountains west of Rannoch Moor, placing particular emphasis on accurate determination of maximum ice-surface altitude, dominant palaeo-iceflow directions and style of ice recession. Proposes revised interpretation, with maximum ice-surface altitude c. 900 m a.s.l., east and south-eastward ice flow and active recession of a dynamic margin. New field-based interpretation agrees well with numerical predictions.
