| Abstract: | Reconstructs deglaciation history of Malangen-Målselv fjord and valley area, near to Tromsø-Lyngen (Younger Dryas) moraine at Bakkejord, Malangen, northern Norway. Bases this on morphostratigraphic, lithostratigraphic (from raised marine and glaciomarine sediments) and geophysical evidence, and 25 new radiocarbon dates from marine shells and foraminifera. Results show that following Skarpnes event c. 12,200 ¹⁴C yr BP and prior to T-L (Younger Dryas) readvance, area was deglaciated at least as far as Sandmo. Documents subsequent history of glacial retreat and intermittent readvance. Discusses whether area was ice-free during Allerød. Unexpectedly high radiocarbon dates highlight need for multiple dates or dating techniques. |
