Record #173364:
A 34-year long record of mass balance and geometric changes of the Djankuat Glacier, Caucasus / Victor V. Popovnin, Renji Naruse.
Title: | A 34-year long record of mass balance and geometric changes of the Djankuat Glacier, Caucasus / Victor V. Popovnin, Renji Naruse. |
Author(s): | Popovnin, Victor V. Naruse, Renji. |
Date: | 2005. |
In: | Bulletin of Glaciological Research. (2005.), Vol. 22 (2005) |
Abstract: | Analyzes 34-year mass balance record from Djankuat glacier in Caucasus, Russia's most investigated glacier and one of 10 reference glaciers of World Glacier Monitoring Service's global mass balance program. Describes glacier's general character. Presents mass balance calculation scheme, time series and statistics. Mean balance is slightly negative, with both accumulation and ablation increasing weakly. Area decreased by 12% from 1968-99. Surface fell by 6 m water equivalent. Discusses mass balance variability and trends and changes in glacier geometry. Unclear whether cessation in 1997 of tendency towards positive mass budget signifies new period of degradation. |
