| Abstract: | Outlines Japanese project "Holocene Environmental Changes in Patagonia Icefield, South America" and activities during first year. Aims to establish glacial chronology of Hielo Patagónico Norte, monitor its outlet glaciers and elucidate their calving mechanism, and establish paleomagnetic characteristics recorded in Middle Miocene-Holocene igneous rock and sediments. Summarises activities and preliminary results from: geomorphological and glaciological work on Glaciar Exploradores; glaciological work on Glaciar Perito Moreno (southern ice field); geological work on Patagonian volcanic fields and alpine glaciers at Cerro San Lorenzo and Cerro Fitzroy. Includes some ice velocity measurements and ¹⁴C dating of moraines. Lists project members. |
