| Abstract: | Reports search for ice-core drilling sites to provide millennial-scale climate record from Mt. McKinley, Alaska. Describes snow pit studies and radio-echo soundings made at Denali Pass (5560 m a.s.l.) and Medical Camp (4350 m a.s.l.). Attributes high-density layers near surface to strong winds. Temperatures observed here and at other Alaska and Yukon sites suggest no melting occurs. Notes potential contamination by climbers. Concludes ice thicknesses at High Camp (5220 m a.s.l.) and Denali Pass at 46-48 m and 60-67 m, respectively, are too thin to provide long climate record. Suggests search for thicker ice eastward of Denali Pass and on Summit Plateau of North Peak. |
