| Abstract: | Investigates amino acid concentration and compositions in ice from three sites as preliminary to ice core study. Samples weighing 0.425 to 0.750 kg were used. Those from Antarctica (Asuka) had 16.8 to 18.3 nmol kg⁻¹ amino acids - close to laboratory blank levels. Those from Chongce ice cap in Western Kunlun Mountains of China had 160 nmol kg⁻¹. Concludes large samples of several kg would be needed for Asuka ice core and iceberg studies. Serine, aspartic acid and alanine were major components in samples, but compositions varied between samples suggesting a relationship to sources of amino acids that might provide clues to past climate. |
