Abstract: Seeks to characterise ski-track snow surface for accurate in situ ski base sliding friction tests. Describes measurement of snow temperature, liquid water content, density, type, grain structure, air temperature and relative humidity, net radiation and cloudiness. Presents results from Norway, Hakuba (Japan) and Sundance (USA) for different snow types and temperatures. Finds in-situ microscope imaging of ski tracks very difficult for new snow types with surface grains smaller than 0.2 mm.
