Abstract: Examines acoustic recognition in rockhopper penguins, and compares results to those for macaroni penguins. Analysis of vocal signatures using methodology derived from theory of information identified parameters of call likely to encode individual identity. Playbacks of modified calls and comparison of parent-chick reunions for two species during fieldwork in Iles Crozet during 2001 breeding season showed double signature system within Eudyptes genus which integrates information simultaneously from temporal and spectral domains. Double encoding is made through tempo given by successive syllables of call and harmonic content of call, confirming that signatures are simpler in nest-building species, and that there are differences in efficacies of signatures within this category.
