Abstract: Built in Norway in 1884 as bottlenose whaler Patria, designed by Johan Chr. Jakobsen, ship was sold to Adrien de Gerlache and renamed Belgica in 1896. Refitted for Antarctic expedition, de Gerlache used vessel on first expedition to winter in Antarctic. Returned to whaling 1901-04 and established depots in Greenland for Baldwin-Ziegler Polar Expedition. Chartered by Duc d'Orléans to survey northeast Greenland coast and sailed on Arctic expeditions in 1907 and 1909. Sold in 1916 to Det Norske Kulsyndikat and renamed Isfjord, freighted coal from Longyearbyen to Norway, before conversion to cod-liver oil refinery. Sunk by German forces in 1940, wreck was re-discovered in 1990.
