Abstract: Argues that fidelity of migratory reindeer to river crossings provides great possibility of exploitation, management, and study of reindeer populations. Examines the growth of large-scale commercial hunting in Yakutiya and Taymyr in 1970s and resulting unemployment among indigenous hunters. Discusses impact of mass slaughters at river crossing points in particular on Kheta river (Taymyr Peninsula)
