Abstract: | Author spent 3 years from 1915 teaching in Ingalit (Little Diomede Island), and Krogh sorted out chaotic diaries. Eide went to desolate spot with newly-married Inuit wife Koodlalook. Describes relations with islanders, their way of life, restarting school (and its rhythym, so different from everyday life), hunting, seasons, death of chief, dances (including swapping), prophecy and bears. His wife was later ruined with spirits by Norwegian friend and died tragically, but he pays warm tribute to her. |
