Abstract: Reviews worldwide literature on population biology of four species of pinnipeds in North Pacific: ringed Phoca hispida, bearded Erignathus barbatus, larga Phoca largha and ribbon Histriophoca fasciata seals. Summarises results of long-term observations by Russian and American zoologists. Describes morphological and ecological peculiarities of populations in Sea of Okhotsk, Bering and Chukchi seas. Discusses hypothesis of pinnipeds as "conductors of sunlight" to under-ice waters and their important role in bioproductivity of North Pacific.
