Record #172734:

Denésoliné (Chipewyan) knowledge of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) movements / A. Kendrick, P.O'B. Lyver.

Title: Denésoliné (Chipewyan) knowledge of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) movements / A. Kendrick, P.O'B. Lyver.
Author(s): Kendrick, A.
Lyver, P. O'B.
Date: 2005.
In: Arctic. (2005.), Vol. 58(2) (2005)
Abstract: Records interviews with elders and hunters from Denésoliné (Chipewyan) community of Łutsël K'é, Northwest Territories, Canada, relating to traditional knowledge of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) movements. Elders recognized expected and unusual levels of variation in caribou movements. Documents Denésoliné knowledge of migration patterns and records explanations for perceived changes, including increases in fire frequency and intensity, mining development, disturbance around traditional migration corridors and water crossings and disturbance of "vanguard" animals. Wildlife management practices may need to further accommodate aboriginal perspectives in future.
