Title: | Study of TEC fluctuations in Antarctic ionosphere during storm using GPS observations / Andrzej Krankowski, Irk I. Shagimuratov, Lubomir W. Baran, Ivan I. Ephishov. |

Abstract: | Distinguishes between large-scale fluctuations (LSF) of total electron content (TEC) caused by ionospheric irregularities bigger than 100-300 km, and irregularities about 10 km in size causing phase fluctuations of GPS signals. Uses data from McMurdo, Casey and Davis stations in Antarctica to analyse TEC fluctuations during two geomagnetic storms in March 2001, when Kp index reached maximal value of 9 and ΣKp made up 60; Dst index reached maximum magnitudes with value of -360 nT. Increase in ionospheric gradients during geomagnetic storms, when irregular gradients sometimes exceed regular gradients, can cause major errors in determining phase ambiguities of GPS observations in Antarctica. |
