Population size and trends of four globally threatened seabirds at Gough Island, South Atlantic Ocean / Richard J. Cuthbert, Erica S. Sommer.

Title: Population size and trends of four globally threatened seabirds at Gough Island, South Atlantic Ocean / Richard J. Cuthbert, Erica S. Sommer.

Date: 2004.
In: Marine Ornithology. (2004.), Vol. 32(1) (2004)
Abstract: Reports on 2000-01 study of four surface-nesting seabirds breeding at sub-Antarctic Gough Island. Northern rockhopper penguin population appears stable at 145,000 pairs; Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross was estimated as approximately 5,300 pairs; sooty albatross appear to have declined by nearly 60% over 28-year period, with present population of no more than 5,000 pairs; southern giant petrel has increased by factor of around three to four since 1979, and is now approximately 224-245 pairs. Estimated annual rate of decrease (3%) of sooty albatross on Gough Island matches observed trends at Marion and Possession Islands in Indian sector of Southern Ocean, suggesting that global population of species is endangered.
