Abstract: | Overview of whaling and conflicting territorial claims in Antarctica in early 20th century, including British claims of 1908 and 1917, establishment in 1919 of Interdepartmental Committee on Research and Development in the Dependencies of the Falkland Islands, and of Discovery Committee in 1924 to undertake research for whaling industry. Outlines Argentine territorial claims of 1925-27 based on 1903-08 Antarctic expeditions of corvette Uruguay. Account of whaling and military action in Southern Ocean and sub-Antarctic islands during 1939-45 Second World War, including 1939 voyage of submarine Olympus, joined in 1941 by cruisers Neptune and Australia; use of Iles Kerguelen as base for German raiders, capture of Norwegian whaling fleet, and successful delivery of whale oil to ports in western France; and 1940 voyage of Queen of Bermuda in South Atlantic and Weddell Sea in search of enemy whaling fleet, followed by destruction of bases, stores and fuel supplies in Antarctic Peninsula and laying of mines. |
